A group of thirteen women farmers from the community of El Caoba, in Poptún, Petén, achieved a successful harvest and sale of green beans, strengthening their family economy and community development. Thanks to collective work and the use of macro tunnels, the producers obtained approximately 20 kg of beans, demonstrating the potential of agricultural technologies adapted to the rural context.
This experience is especially relevant in a region where the impacts of climate change are most visible: intense rainfall, high temperatures, and irregular precipitation periods threaten traditional production and increase the risk of food insecurity. In response, macro tunnels and greenhouses protect crops, regulate humidity and temperature, and improve crop yields, strengthening the resilience of farming families and promoting production systems that favor ecological and economic viability.
The achievements of the “ Women in Development” initiative add to other progress observed in the project throughout the year. In January, 36 families in El Caoba produced 285 cucumbers in the first harvest under the macro tunnel, which were sold within the community due to high demand. In the coming weeks, production will diversify to include cucumbers, jalapeño peppers, and cilantro, with the goal of expanding income opportunities and promoting an environmentally responsible development model in Petén.
