A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia’s Pacific coast on August 10, causing severe damage to homes and infrastructure and leaving hundreds of people trapped in the rubble. Authorities report numerous casualties and widespread emergencies across multiple municipalities, including landslides and disruptions to basic services.
Two days after the tragedy, official figures confirm 240 deaths and more than 1,300 injuries. The epicenter was located 5 kilometers east of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, according to geological reports. The tremors were felt across much of the country and also reached Panama, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
The consequences have been devastating. More than 1,500 homes have been damaged and at least 60 buildings have collapsed. Landslides have blocked roads and hampered access to rural areas, where many families remain isolated and without basic resources. The scale of the disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of the region’s communities and the urgent need for an immediate response.
