RAMI ALKURDI, DIRECTOR OF AL MAHD FOR TRAINING AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The war in Syria has given rise to a humanitarian crisis throughout the region. Some 250,000 people, mostly civilians, died, and since early 2013, the number of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries has more than doubled. The most recent UNHCR figures indicate that more than four million Syrian refugees are seeking a sense of security in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq, as well as in North Africa. More than half are children, many of whom have been traumatized by the war.

An estimated 1.3 million Syrians have escaped to Jordan. This massive influx has placed massive pressure on the economy and public services, health, water, education, energy, service delivery, and youth employment. In rural and urban communities across the country, Syrian refugees are faced with significant challenges. Without any work, families depend on their savings and are more vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and dropping out of school. Furthermore, they are exposed to psychosocial disorders caused by the war and their displacement. Women and children, representing almost 80% of the total refugees, are most vulnerable to sexual exploitation, physical and psychological abuse, and neglect.

In Amman and Madaba, Global Humanitaria conducts humanitarian aid and educational projects for Syrian refugee children, in collaboration with Al Mahd for Training and Social Development.
